The Papua New Guinea champions beat Tupapa Maraerenga of the Cook Islands in the opening game of Group A in Vanuatu and it was their forward line who once again impressed.
Gunemba, 31, scored four goals to take his tally this season to 10 goals in just five games having scored six in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. Dabinyaba, meanwhile, now has eight in four games.
Gunemba’s night was summed up with his hat trick goal, a superb lob from 30 yards over a stranded goalkeeper after a quick counter attack.
Dabinyaba opened the scoring after just 10 minutes when he pounced on poor defending from Tupapa. Five minutes later Gunemba had his first of the tournament.
Tupapa did show signs of life through livewire striker Maro Bonsu-Maro but goalkeeper Ronald Warisan was equal to his attempt before Solomon Islands international Tutizama Tanito scored the third for Lae – his third goal in just four games for his new club.
The game was now end-to-end and Maro-Bonsu won a penalty for Tupapa which was converted by qualifying top scorer Sean Latimer.
However, two goals from Gunemba and a second for Dabinyaba quickly put Lae in control in a second half flurry as their superior firepower began to show. Gunemba added a fourth goal late on to complete the rout.
Maro Bonsu-Maro got a deserved goal to make the scores 7-2 before the end of the match, but it was too little too late for Tupapa.
