Solomon Warriors scored six against AS Lossi to win their first game of the Oceania Champions League group.
The Solomon Islands champions were beaten 2-0 by Erakor Golden Star in their first game and it was a Vanuatu star who netted the opener in their crunch tie.
Kensi Tangis took advantage of hesitant defending from New Caledonian side AS Lossi after two minutes and slid home the opening goal. The Vanuatu striker has had a superb couple of months after starring in the Pacific Mini Games for his national side in December.
It was a second Vanuatu player, midfielder John Alick, who set up the second for Solomon striker Gageme Feni to sweep home, before Tangis netted his second of the game with a high shot into the roof of the net.
Solomon Warriors were coasting and soon made it 4-0 when Alick got on the scoresheet himself just before half time after seeing an initial shot saved.
AS Lossi, who lost their opening game 4-0 to AS Dragon and are now out of the competition, did strike back after a superb volley from the edge of the area by Morgan Mathelon.
At 4-1 up and with three goals scored by Vanuatu players, it was time for Solomon Islands’ talented footballers to step up and they did it in style through Gagame Feni.
The 25-year-old former Canterbury United striker scored an incredible second goal, chipping the ball over a stranded goalkeeper from outside of the area to make it 5-1. He then added a sixth in the final minute to secure an impressive hat trick.
Solomon Warriors are now on three points and face table-topping AS Dragon in the final game. Erakor Golden Star, also on three points but with a lower goal difference, face bottom side AS Lossi.
